dc.description.abstracten The article is devoted to sacred songs written by Father Tymoteusz (Tomasz Józef) Szczurowski, (1740–1812), Basilian monk, a religious writer, a doctor of theology and canonical law, protonotary of the Holy See, a missionary acting in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The most of songs Szczurowski published in the period of being an monk in a Basilian monastery in Biała (1784–1796), owned by Radziwiłłs, and while he was in charge of a missions in Brześć parish. In religious works Wzór doskonałości panieńskiej [The model of virgins’ perfection] (Poczajów 1772), Głos wzbudzający serca chrześcijańskie [The voice inspiring christian hearts] (Lublin 1787), Misja Bialska [The Biała Mission] (Supraśl 1792) and Pieśni pobożne [The sacred songs] (Lublin 1801) Szczurowski printed many sacred songs in Polish and Ukrainian (transliterated in Latin alphabet) without notation of music for the needs of Greek Catholic Church. The active missionary and editorial activity of Szczurowski in the last quarter of the 18th century contributed to the dissemination of his songs in the then Uniate Circles. The manuscript songbooks of the 80–90’s of 18th century containing texts in Polish of songs (divine, about the Holy Virgin, about the saints and daily prayers) by Szczurowski have survived to this day. In the next century these songs were also popular. The Szczurowski’s songs were performed in the late 1830s and early 1840s by Warsaw’s Basilian monks as well as by the Uniate clergyman Father Paweł Szymański (1782–1852), professor of the Imperial Roman Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw. The Szczurowski’s songs discussed in the article, Father Michał Marcin Mioduszewski CM (1787–1868) published his Dodatek do Śpiewnika kościelnego [Supplement to the Church Songbook] (Kraków 1842), including Polish songs from the Catholic repertoire with standardized texts and melodies for a solo voice. uk
